ZAYPONA Project interviewed Ana Iaci, a great eclectic singer from Brasília, on July 24th, 2014. Here is what she had to say about the essence of beauty. For more info, please visit her website www.anaiaci.com.br (by the way, "Iaci" means "Moon" or "Moon Goddess" in our Native Tupi language).
ZAYPONA: How has your road with beauty been, and what made you seek art as a way of living? How do you see beauty in everything you see, explore and live professionaly?
ANA IACI: For me, art was not a way to seek beauty, it was actually something very natural that happened mostly because of my family of musicians, and also for a talent I have always manifested in Music as well as in Visual Arts and Drawing - I really liked to draw and started out as a self-taught individual. Concerning beauty, I remember once being in a group of women of several different ages, and I remember realizing how beautiful they all were. Each one had her own body, her own hair, and very different features - they were all actually very different overall, in their personalities and also phisically, but they were all so beautiful, and that is an insight I have been carrying with me to this day. When I look at someone, I don't care if the person has only one eyebrow, that is not what I am looking at. I see the person's beauty. I think, "Wow, what beautiful eyes!" or "Wow, this person has such wonderful hair", and that really moves me. One message I always try to emphasize in my work is this: each person should feel great with who she or he is, with the genetic code they have enherited from their ancestors. And when we feel good in our own bodies, which is a gift we have been granted from Mother Earth, we can express this beauty and this joy.
ZAYPONA: You live your life expressing yourself in quite a few areas - a very strong contact with nature, a degree in Forest Engeneering, and also Art, Music, Drawing, Dance, Spirituality. Beauty is a part of all theses areas, I assume. Is that how you feel too?
ANA IACI: Absolutely. There are many elements that are part of my personality and the expression of beauty is one of them - beauty connected to femininity; beauty and femininity connected to spirituality, and all those essences are part of each other. Art is also part of this, I feel as if I have many roads that correlate to one another in some way. The way I relate to nature winds up being spiritual, but it is also intelectual and deals with research, but this is not a separate area, it is somenthing that comes along with all the other essences and is part of my whole being.
ZAYPONA: Nowadays beauty tends to be stigmatized as something superficial and mostly physical; it is not usually recognized for its sublime contents. What do you think abut this idea fo beauty? Could it be considered a distortion?
ANA IACI: I can tell you about two interpretations of beauty that bother me. One is a specific beauty standard that relies on mathematical proportion measures, saying that a person has to symetric - how absurd does that sound - and another is that beauty is futile and that vanity is a sin. We are moved by belief systems, and if I believe that sex is a sin, that vanity is a sin, I will run into people that are in the same vibrational frequency and will atract situations that enhance this belief system. If, however, I believe quite the opposite - that sex is sacred, for instance, I will atract a partner that also believes it. If I believe that beauty is a natural expression of nature itself, the beauty of a flower, the beauty of a waterfall, then I will also resonate in that frequency and will express that in my life.
ZAYPONA: Today your main professional focus is in Music, but how does it relate to the other areas of your life?
ANA IACI: I really enjoy enhancing my expressions. I can say that the type of Art I feel most comfortable with is Music - it seems like Music and I are already more tuned with each other, and I believe that the other Arts allow me to express my music in better ways, and each time I discover theater, or painting, it feels as if I am uncovering a new opportunity for myself also. So I dive in those arts with the same passion I have for Music and they all collaborate with each other. When I paint, it frequently helps to unlock some sort of creativity, it helps me go with the flow, write a poem that becomes a song. When I dance, there is also total connection to music, when I read a text out loud, that helps me interpret a song. So everything is correlated. The other day I was reading that the great artists and thinkers of the past were at the same time musicians, artists, painters, mathematicians, and had such a great range of knowledges that it tured them into geniuses. Perhaps nowadays, with the separation of knowledges - "Oh, Philosophy is this and Mathematics is that", putting everything in these little boxes, we have difficulty in perceiving that knowledge is hugely integrated, a big whole thing, and that human creativity cannot be trapped in theses tiny little spaces.

ZAYPONA: Como é a sua trajetória com a beleza, o que te fez buscar a arte, e como você vê a beleza em tudo o que explora e vive profissionalmente?
ANA IACI: Eu vejo duas interpretações da beleza que me incomodam. Uma é o padrão de beleza que dá explicações matemáticas de proporção, de que a pessoa tem que ser simétrica - olha só que coisa absurda - e a outra é de que beleza é futilidade e que a vaidade é um pecado. Nós somos movidos por crenças, e se eu acredito que o sexo é um pecado, que a vaidade é um pecado, eu vou encontrar pessoas que estão nessa ressonância e situações que alimentem essa minha crença. Agora, se eu acredito no oposto - que o sexo é sagrado, o companheiro que eu vou encontrar é um companheiro que também acredita nisso. Se eu acredito que a beleza é uma expressão natural, da própria natureza, a beleza da flor, a beleza de uma cachoeira, então eu também vou entrar nessa ressonância e vou expressar isso na minha vida.
ZAYPONA: Profissionalmente, o seu foco maior hoje é a música, mas como ela se relaciona com as outras frentes?
ANA IACI: Para mim a arte não foi uma busca pela beleza, foi na verdade algo muito natural que veio acontecendo por causa da minha família, que é de músicos, e também por um talento que eu sempre tive para a arte, tanto a Música como as Artes Visuais e o Desenho - eu gostava muito de desenhar e comecei como autodidata nisso. Sobre a beleza, me lembro uma vez de estar em um grupo de mulheres de diversas idades, olhar para elas, e perceber como todas eram lindas. Cada uma com seu corpo, seu cabelo, com suas feições muito diferentes - aliás, mulheres muito diferentes tanto na personalidade quanto fisicamente, mas todas lindas, e aquilo foi para mim um insight que eu levo até hoje. Quando eu olho para alguém, eu não estou olhando se ela é monocelha, não estou olhando isso - eu olho a beleza da pessoa. Penso, "Nossa, que olhos lindos! Nossa, essa pessoa tem um cabelo maravilhoso", e isso me sensibiliza. E uma mensagem que eu gostaria de passar com o meu trabalho, e na verdade a minha postura em relação à beleza é essa: que a pessoa se sinta bem com o que ela é, com a genética que ela tem em reverência aos seus ancestrais. E quando ela se sente bem com o próprio corpo, que é um presente - o corpo é um presente da Mãe Terra - ela pode expressar essa beleza, essa alegria.
ZAYPONA: Você tem uma série de frentes - um contato muito forte com a natureza, uma formação em engenharia florestal, a arte, a música, o desenho, a dança, a espiritualidade. A beleza permeia todas elas, imagino. É isso que você sente?
ANA IACI: Com certeza. Existem certas coisas que fazem parte da minha personalidade e a expressão da beleza é uma delas - a beleza atrelada à feminilidade; a beleza e a feminilidade atreladas à espiritualidade, e uma conectada à outra. A arte também não está separada disso - é como se eu tivesse várias frentes correlacionadas de alguma forma. O meu modo de me relacionar com a natureza acaba sendo espiritual, mas é também como estudiosa e pesquisadora, e isso não é algo separado, e sim que anda junto, faz parte do meu ser.

ZAYPONA: Profissionalmente, o seu foco maior hoje é a música, mas como ela se relaciona com as outras frentes?
ANA IACI: Eu gosto muito de aprimorar a minha expressão. Digamos que o tipo de arte onde eu me sinto mais confortável é a Música - parece que eu e a Música já estamos mais afinadas. Acredito que as outras Artes me ajudam a expressar melhor ainda a minha música, mas cada vez que eu descubro o teatro, e descubro a pintura, é como se eu descobrisse uma nova oportunidade para mim também. Então eu entro com a mesma paixão com a qual entrei na música e um colabora com o outro. Quando eu pinto, muitas vezes isso me ajuda a desbloquear uma criatividade, a entrar em um fluxo, a escrever uma poesia e isso vira uma música. Quando eu danço, há também uma total conexão com a música, quando falo um texto, isso me ajuda a interpretar uma canção. Então está tudo correlacionado. Eu estava lendo esses dias que os grandes artistas e os grandes pensadores do passado eram músicos, artistas, matemáticos, pintores, e tinham uma gama tão ampla de conhecimentos que isso os tornava verdadeiros gênios. Hoje talvez com a separação do conhecimento - "Ah, filosofia é isso, matemática é aquilo", botando tudo em caixinhas, tenhamos mais dificuldades de perceber que o conhecimento é uma coisa só e que a criatividade do ser humano não pode ficar presa em caixinhas.
